About The Role

Azul Systems, a leading provider of Java runtime solutions, is seeking a Compiler Performance Engineer to enhance Falcon, its high-performance JIT compiler. The role focuses on optimizing generated machine code for Java workloads, improving performance across x86_64 and AArch64 architectures, and contributing to LLVM. Candidates will work with real enterprise workloads, drive measurable performance gains, and collaborate with a distributed team of compiler experts.

Responsibilities

Analyze performance of Java benchmarks and customer workloads

Identify gaps in generated code and trace root causes in the compiler

Implement and improve optimizations in Falcon's middle and back end such as inlining, loop optimizations, vectorization, redundancy elimination, speculative optimizations

Improve code generation for x86_64 and AArch64 and write tests and benchmarks to validate improvements

Requirements

2+ years of professional experience in compilers, JIT compilers or low level performance engineering
Strong C++ design and coding skills
Solid understanding of compiler optimization theory: SSA, data flow analysis, loop transformations
Ability to read assembly and reason about instruction sequence performance
